Frequently Asked
Questions
How is Kung Fu different that Karate, or Taekwondo, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Kung Fu focuses on balance, coordination, flexibility, and flowing movement, along with discipline and respect. It is also the oldest martial art, and has influenced all the others. However, the most important thing for a new martial artist is the quality of the school, not the style. Our style, Choy Lay Fut, is both broad and deep, and known for practical self-defense. A trial class will show you what we're all about!
Do I need to be physically fit to start training?
No, we will start you off slowly as you build strength, flexibility, and stamina. Even fit students, however, will be challenged. We can help you get into the best shape of your life! A Kung Fu workout is strenuous, effective, and fun.
Do I need prior experience in martial arts?
No, most of our students have no prior experience. If you've studied another martial art, you will probably make faster progress, but you would still need to start at the beginning to learn the specific skills of Kung Fu and how it differs from what you've learned.
When can I start training?
As soon as you like. New students enroll throughout the year, and we ease them into ongoing classes. You can be as young as 4, and there's no upper age limit.
What if I or my child has ADHD or is on the spectrum or has other neurodivergent conditions?
That is no barrier to success in Kung Fu. Our kind and patient instructors specialize in students with many different challenges: the repetition, focus, breathing exercises and discipline have proved to be very beneficial, especially in the following areas: self-regulation, self-confidence, self-esteem, physical coordination, body awareness, and social skills.
How much does it cost?
There are different plans to suit your needs and your budget. We give discounts for families, police, fire, and members of the armed forces, as well as college students. We've had families who have stayed with us for decades. You can pay monthly, and cancel whenever you want.
Who teaches your classes?
Under the leadership of Sifu Daniel Ostrow, we have three other instructors with the same rank, three more Senior Instructors, and many Assistant Instructors. All are trained not only in Kung Fu, but in the art of teaching. Our student-to-teacher ratio is second to none and most classes have 10-15 students or less.
How often should I train?
Beginners start at twice a week, but we have many students who train more often. Consistent attendance is key to progress.
What kind of progress can I expect?
With consistent attendance (and a little practice), you will learn basic skills and improve your fitness level within a few weeks. But Kung Fu, like any martial art, takes time and effort. Promotion to the next belt is in your hands; we evaluate each student daily, and are always concerned with your progress.
How does your Tryout work?
Student will arrive before class and be given a tour and a short private lesson. You may take two classes (or more) to make a decision. A new student should have an open attitude, and be willing to try new things, but it may be a little scary for younger students. But it will be fun. We get new, inexperienced students regularly, so we know how to make them feel welcome.
